When did you first start FitWit-ing? October of 2020.
Tell us about your sports & fitness background:
I did not play sports growing up—though I’ve always had a competitive spirit and been athletic—because I was far too shy. At 20, I became an avid runner but stopped six years later because I developed IT band syndrome. That injury led me to begin a combination of yoga, Pilates, and strength training instead. Today, I just FitWit and recently rediscovered my love for running.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting FitWit?
I stopped running in earnest about 5 years ago, but decided to start again because of the pandemic. In the past, every time I’ve tried to start running again, my IT band has been an issue —causing me pain and making it impossible to go beyond 1–3 miles. Since starting FitWit, I haven’t had any pain while running, and my running pace has improved considerably. Additionally, I have shaved a little over a minute from my first 2k rowing time in a few months and generally feel stronger.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like FitWit that were totally unexpected?
FitWit was a boost to my mental health during the pandemic. Prior to starting FitWit in October 2020, I had stopped working out consistently for 7 months. I did not realize how much I desperately needed both exercise and community.
Why do you FitWit?
I FitWit because it makes me happy. The sense of community is palpable and the positive energy the coaches exude make my day.
I enjoy a kettlebell complex and any rowing workout day.
Least favorite workouts?
I generally dislike any 100% bodyweight workout day, especially if it involves high knees, mountain climbers, burpees, or ninjas.
Three words to describe you:
Introverted, reliable, purposeful
Any favorite FitWit moments?
I really enjoyed participating in the 2k challenge in February.
My goals for the end of the year are to row a 2k in <8 minutes, run a 5k at a 7:20 min/mi pace (which would be a PR), and perform an unassisted pull-up (or -ups).
Words to live by?
“Wherever you go, there you are”
– (It’s the title of a book by Jon Kabat-Zinn)
Something cool we don’t know about you?
I haven’t been rock climbing since March 2020 (ugh, pandemic), but it was something I was doing weekly since 2018. I also speak Spanish (it was the first language I learned to speak) and would love to speak Spanish (I don’t get the opportunity to speak it as often as I’d like) if you do.
Anything else you’d care to share?
Don’t hesitate to say “hi” or “hola” if you see me at one of the 5:15 classes.
