Raque: March 2021

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

Heather: I tried lots of different sports as a kid — ballet, swimming, softball, gymnastics — but nothing stuck, and we were always moving away. Raque put up with me whining about feeling old and fat for years until he finally challenged me to join a month-long boot camp with him in 2010. I was so surprised that it didn’t kill me! Raque moved overseas for grad school, so I joined FitWit the next year with a good friend and fell in love with it. After several years, FitWit friends left, work got busy and my focus shifted away from my health to other things. Raque moved back to town early this year, got tired of me whining (again) and dared me to rejoin FitWit. I said I would if he would.

Raque: Our dad challenged us to join a sport each year of school…I did swimming, wrestling, soccer, and football. But, I discovered running as an adult. Once I got past how much it hurt to run for extended periods of time, I found that I got into the “zone” and sort of tranced out…it was like active meditation. It has helped me in so many stressful periods of my life.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting FitWit?

Heather: During my first go-round, I achieved things that I had never even imagined for myself! I lost about 50 pounds, got really strong, conquered box jumps and double-unders, ran some 5ks and felt great. Since returning to FitWit this spring, I’ve had to re-learn what my (now older) body can do. It’s slower going, but I feel strong again, and I can tell I’m improving.

Raque: I have noticed I have a lot more core stability. I have struggled with back problems for a while, and building up my core strength has been really helpful.

What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like FitWit that were totally unexpected?

Heather: FitWit has taught me that I am stronger than my fears.

Raque: I have gotten much better at putting myself to bed at night!

Why do you FitWit?

Heather: Raque makes me! (JK) I FitWit because I want to be strong and flexible for as long as possible. It makes me feel good in my body and happier.

Raque: I blame Heather! (JK) FitWit is the first part of my mission to be more active in life.

Favorite workouts?

Heather: I like kettlebell workouts, rowing on the ergs, and practicing pull-ups with Raque.

Raque: I like running workouts, strengthening exercises with kettlebells, and pull ups with Heather.

Least favorite workouts?

Heather: Anything involving squats, running, or the bikes. Or burpees!

Raque: Burpees (I hurt my back doing them once … now I really have to concentrate on my form.)

Any favorite FitWit moments?

Heather: Exercising in the dark with friends, deadlifting 80+ pounds for the first time, and when everyone wished Raque a happy birthday.

Raque: Watching the sky change colors as the sun comes up and when Liz finally says, “ok, clap it up!” at the end of the workout. I realize that I have already done a big thing with my day and the day has only just begun.

Three words to describe you:

Heather:  Silly, stubborn, sleepy.

Raque: Wonky, lumpy, wiggly.

Fitness Goals?

Heather: My first unassisted pull-up!

Raque: Stronger back and core…oh, and to be able to do double-unders for a whole minute.

Words to live by?

“Do what you can. Use what you have. Start where you are.”

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Viktor E. Frankl

Something cool we don’t know about you?

Heather: I used to be cool. Back in the day, I ran with the bulls in Pamplona, saw U2 and Duran Duran with Raque in Italy, and sat next to Annie Lennox at a 2-year-old’s birthday party. Now, Raque is the one who is cool.

Raque: I used to perform with friends doing fire breathing and juggle/dance with fire Poi. Oh…and I am related to Ms. Teenage Guam and Ms. Congeniality 1979 (yes, my sister is kind of a big deal!)

Anything else you’d care to share?

Heather: I want to be like my little brother when I grow up!

Raque: I want to be like my big sis… only I don’t want to grow up!
