How Can I Be Better? – Weekly News 10/13

Happy Friday! And a big high-five to the newbies that joined us on Monday. Every Friday you’ll get an email from me with all the happenings of the gym for the week.

This week, Coach Stacy from our Old Fourth Ward gym, shared a few thoughts with her members that certainly apply to us as well. Her wise words below:

By virtue of the fact that you are receiving this email, I think we can agree that group fitness offers waaaay more benefits than drawbacks – from the group energy, camaraderie and inspiration to the motivation, accountability, friendly competition and shared goal of being better. One of the few drawbacks of the group setting though is that your coaches can’t always be up in everyone’s business all the time. Drawback or benefit? You decide!

When your coaches’ backs are turned and you don’t have someone over you giving you specific instruction, what do you do? In these moments, it’s easy to slack off, compromise form, and turn off the intensity. We’ve all been guilty of this at one time or another.

The next time that your coaches back is turned toward you with their eyes are focused on another and you start contemplating how much you’d like to put a lot of air between your butt and the crate or about how much you’d like to ease up on those air bike pedals, think about these words from some of the greats:

You can decide which one speaks to you, but the takeaway is the same 😉 Your true character is revealed in the details – the seemingly trivial things. So, who are you when no one is looking? By bringing awareness to this we can ask ourselves, “How can I be better?”

Even when no one is watching and especially when no one is watching, pick up heavier kettlebells, go lower in your squat, run or pedal as hard as you can or work on that mobility limitation that is holding you back. Use the motivation of your goals and the inspiration of great coaches like Wooden and Dunn to be better!

Lululemon Trunk Show @ the Kirk – Join us on Sunday, 11/4 from 11am-1pm for late morning snacks and mimosas while you browse new MEN’S AND WOMEN’S workout (or athleisure) wear in the comfort of the FitWit Kirkwood gym. And, Kirkwood Coach Ginger will be there to answer your questions on how to achieve healthier, younger-looking skin with Rodan+Fields.

If you plan to attend, please email [email protected] AND let her know what kind of clothes you’d like to see on 11/14. The folks at Lulu are happy to bring whatever we’re most interested in. Annnnd, don’t forget that they have men’s clothes too!

Youth Athletic Development – Soon we’ll be launching a new class specifically targeted towards kids who want to be better athletes. This is quite different than our FitWit Kids program where the objectives are fun, self-improvement and learning basic exercise movements. Youth Athletic Development will focus on improving speed, power and agility. We want to gauge initial interest with our own members first. So if you’re interested for your child, please email me. Right now, we’ll likely start with a Monday late afternoon/early evening class, so also include in the email if that’s feasible for you. If not, what days/times work best for you? Thanks!

ELDOA Classes at FitWit – Our first ELDOA class on Wed was a big hit. If you’re unfamiliar with this class, check out the FB post here to get caught up. Highly recommended if you’d like to normalize disc bulges, actually stand taller, reduce overall joint inflammation and decrease chronic pain.

Because we had good interest, Andrew has decided to run a Tuesday 6 pm class and a Wed 11 am class in our gym next week! Space will be limited, as this is open to everyone (not just FitWit). Sign up here today if you want to guarantee yourself a spot (click on the ELDOA CLASSES link at the bottom of the page). Open to spouses, friends, and family too, especially for those currently with pain or inflammation or injury.

October Monthly Challenge – Run a marathon! Don’t worry – it doesn’t have to be all in one sitting (or running?). The challenge is to accumulate 26.2 miles of running during the month of October. If you are looking for a short-term goal to help with motivation or just looking for a little extra something something to step up your fitness game this month, play along! And, don’t forget to keep track of your miles on the whiteboard.

Reminder: in order to count your running miles for purposes of the challenge, you must complete the warm-up drills from this video prior to your run.
