Nutritious Nuggets- Holiday Game Plan

Most people consume a ridiculous amount of food during the holidays and then feel pretty crappy afterwards for the next few days (in this case until New Years). How awesome would it be to make a plan that let you enjoy all the foods you love without the guilt afterwards? Sounds almost too good to be true, but with a little strategy you can have your cake and eat it to!



Before we get into all the groovy strategies it’s critical to first look at and understand when you’ll feel tempted to overdo it with your food. Here are just a few examples:

  • it’s cold and rainy outside and you’re just chillin’ watching tv
  • Christmas parties galore
  • Preparing food for a party you’re hosting
  • Sweet treats given to you by co workers and friends
  • Bringing candy and baked goods to your kids school
  • Holiday aisles at the grocery store

Take note of these situations that trigger you into overeating or making poor choices and now bring on the awareness. period.


Now this is important especially if you know the situation is going to set off a trigger that turns into a downward spiral.

Go ahead and ask what will be served: This way you’ll know what you’re up against.

Ask about bringing a dish to your party: There’s nothing wrong with bringing a healthier plate to share with other guest. And hey maybe someone else will thank you for it!

Don’t show up hungry:  Before the party try eating a small protein packed meal/ a smoothie/ a bowl of soup/ hummus and veggies. This way you’re not dying of hunger and pigging out on sugar.



Practice an 80/20 rule: Focus on eating nutrient dense foods 80% of the time and indulge only 20% of the time with no guilt. You’ll still have to say no to some sweets but you don’t have to say no to everything. During that 20% make sure to eat slowly (or drink) and fully savor those bites.


Holiday cocktails can be hard to say no to and if you’re enjoying the holiday with a glass of bubbly champagne or that egg nog with extra cheer make sure to hydrate with WATER before and after your drink. We know our Nutrition challenge is going on 10 glasses of delicious water a day and we certainly can start doing this whenever.


Sometimes life happens and regardless of our intentions we can still feel bloated, lethargic, and less than great the next day. Which can then lead us down a 3-4 day rabbit hole of bad choices. Start your day with a big ole’ glass of water add some lemon to it if you’re feeling fancy, stay away from processed sugars, get some veggies in, and MOVE your body.

Go ahead and stash these nuggets of knowledge in your pocket, we could all use a lil’ routine and structure to keep that unwanted weight off!
