Nutritious Nuggets: Is Stress Stopping You From Feeling Your Best?

We all experience daily stress. Stressors such as jobs, family responsibilities, TRAFFIC, the moment you find out the workout is 100 burpees for time…

Many of these stressors are not “bad” and many we cannot change. However, it is important to find balance to make sure your mind and body is getting the rest and recovery it needs. Continuous high levels of stress can lead to increased cortisol and adrenaline levels which is no bueno and can lead to outcomes none of us desire, such as:

  • Poor digestion
  • Impaired immune function (do you get sick a lot?)
  • Increased food cravings
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Poor cellular repair (aka not recovering after workouts and low energy during workouts)
  • Fat Gain
  • Muscle Loss

Whoa, that’s a lot that can happen just from extra stress! While it is impossible to cut out all the stress you can ADD in activities to give your body the opportunity to “check out,” rest, and recover so it doesn’t freak and start malfunctioning. So at first instead of focusing on cutting out stress, focus on adding a relaxing activity to your daily routine. Here are some possible activities:

  • Get outside! This can be walking or just sitting on a patio and enjoying the outdoors
  • Yoga, light stretching or mobility work
  • Reading
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Meditation
  • Take a bath
  • Journal
  • Play games with the fam (hopefully this is stress free!)
  • Listen to music
  • Get a massage
  • Take a nap

Ideally we should try to get at least 30 minutes of stress relieving activity a day. BUT, if the idea of adding something in for 30 minutes stresses you out then just tart out 5 minutes a day and slowly work up to 30 minutes. Not only will you feel better but others around you will notice a difference too!
